Understanding Legal Battles

After struggling for years to wrap my head around the legal drama in the news, I was faced with a pretty big challenge of my own. My son was accused of a crime that he swore he didn't commit, although I was a little less than convinced. However, after evaluating the facts, I could tell that he was telling the truth, so we hired a professional lawyer who could help us through the challenge of fighting the charges. The lawyer worked hard to make things right, and within a few short months, my son was in the clear. Read more about legal problems in this blog.

What Is A DUI Going To Cost You? Financial Ramifications Of Driving Under The Influence

It doesn't take much to send your blood alcohol level over the legal limit. Sometimes, the alcohol metabolizes over time, causing your blood alcohol levels to increase rather than decrease from the time you quit drinking to the time you drive yourself home. Understanding the financial ramifications of driving under the influence may help you be more vigilant if you enjoy drinking with your friends.

Fines

Fines and fees associated with criminal charges won't come as a surprise to anyone. You will likely have to post bail, retain a lawyer, cover court costs, and pay your penalty for driving under the influence. DUI drivers are hardly shown leniency when it comes to the fines and fees. The penalty fines can cost you thousands of dollars and grow exponentially if you have been charged with multiple DUIs. Unfortunately, the cost of a DUI doesn't stop there; there are several other bills you will end up paying for out of pocket as you navigate the process of being charged with a DUI.

Community Service

In some states, people who have been sentenced to community service are required to pay a certain penalty out of pocket. It could be a lump sum based on the number of hours they have been sentenced to, or it could be a rate per hour served. For example, if you have been sentenced to 60 hours of community service and you live in the state of Florida, you would have to pay $10 per hour served. So in addition to your court fines, you would also have to pay $600 to complete your community service.

Impound and/or Towing Fees

If you have been pulled over and arrested, your car may be towed and impounded. The severity of your DUI is a determining factor when it comes to turning your car over to a relative or having your car towed and impounded. Because DUIs aren't tolerated, most arresting officers will call for your car to be towed and impounded. If you have multiple DUIs, you may not be able to get your car back right away. So, not only will you foot the bill for the towing and impounding, you will also have to cover the cost of transportation until your vehicle is released from the impound.

Treatment

Some states require treatment as part of your DUI sentence. Like community service or impound fees, you are responsible for the cost of the treatment or classes. These programs vary by state, and don't be surprised when these treatment classes end up costing you thousands of dollars.

Other treatment options may include having a device placed on your car requiring you to pass a breathalyzer test before your car will start. You will be responsible for the cost of the installation as well as the monthly maintenance fees associated with the device.

DUIs cost you more than just a blemish on your record. Driving under the influence is incredibly dangerous to you and unsuspecting drivers around you. People facing these charges are punished to the fullest extent of the law possible. Avoid these costly fees by checking out http://www.hogankimrey.com and by making the decision to never drive under the influence. If you do spend a night out drinking, make sure you have a designated driver who can get you home safely. When in doubt, call a friend, family member, or cab to take you home.
