Understanding Legal Battles

After struggling for years to wrap my head around the legal drama in the news, I was faced with a pretty big challenge of my own. My son was accused of a crime that he swore he didn't commit, although I was a little less than convinced. However, after evaluating the facts, I could tell that he was telling the truth, so we hired a professional lawyer who could help us through the challenge of fighting the charges. The lawyer worked hard to make things right, and within a few short months, my son was in the clear. Read more about legal problems in this blog.

3 Common Misconceptions About Auto Accident Claims

Been involved in a car accident that wasn't your fault? If so, then you'll certainly want to consult with a car accident attorney sooner rather than later; this way, you can make sure you have a fighting chance at getting the compensation you deserve. In the meantime, however, there are a few things you need to know. Specifically, you should be aware of the truth behind these common misconceptions regarding auto accident cases.

You Can't Get Compensation if the Driver is Uninsured

If it turns out that the other driver involved in the accident was uninsured or underinsured, you might think you're simply out of luck when it comes to recovering any damages for your accident. However, this doesn't have to be the case. Check with your insurance agent to see if your policy contains coverage for underinsured or uninsured motorists. Many do. Even if you don't have this specific type of coverage, nothing is stopping you from taking legal action against the responsible party and reaching a settlement outside of the insurance companies.

You're Obligated to Speak With the Driver's Insurance Company

If the other driver involved in the accident did have insurance, then don't be surprised if you're contacted by his or her insurance company soon after the accident. The agent will probably try to gather some more information about the accident, any injuries you sustained, and what kind of damage may have been done to your vehicle. However, understand that you aren't under any legal obligation to speak with the agent, regardless of what he or she may claim. In fact, if you have an attorney, you should direct all contact regarding the accident to him or her.

If You're Not Injured, You Don't Need Medical Attention

Don't make the mistake of failing to seek medical attention after an accident. Even if you don't have any obvious injuries, it's important to be checked out by a doctor to be safe. Oftentimes, injuries like whiplash don't make themselves evident until days after the accident. By seeing a doctor, you'll have a record of doing so in the event that you need to sue for medical bills later on. Failing to see a doctor immediately after an accident will make it difficult for you to collect reimbursement for any medical bills down the road. And if you are injured, make sure you go to all of your follow up appointments as scheduled.
